POPPY AND FRIENDS

HISTORY

Poppy Pitt is an Artist and Singer Songwriter and the lead singer in Poppy and Friends. She started writing anti-folk style songs and performing them in pubs and clubs around south east London when she was 19 as she had just started a BA in Textiles at Goldsmiths University of London. The music scene around Goldsmiths at that time was very inspiring and poppy became a regular on the burgeoning anti folk scene.

She played in London and Brighton for the next three years with various other Folk joining her, and so the name Poppy and friends developed. However in 2009 Poppy moved to Bristol and started looking for a permanent band. After many gumtree misadventures Poppy finally met her first member of Poppy And Friends on the Mega Bus! traveling from London to Bristol they got Chatting and shortly after arriving back in Bristol they got playing. This happy chap turned out to be Mike Fergie (Poppy and friends first drummer) Mike swiftly introduced Poppy to Zach Gregory (double bass player) and she whipped them into a band, and headed off on their first UK tour, to Promote Poppy's first EP - Fishes, with Poppy's songs just about under their belts.

That year Poppy and Friends also brought out Poppy's second EP, Did It! and recorded their first Album, Beautiful To Me. Which was released in October of 2009. The Release of Beautiful To Me was followed by a 12 date UK tour, supporting Darren Haymen and appearing in various venues across the UK, From Hull to Penryn! "

After the tour Mike decided it was time to flap his wings and find other things, and Poppy and Zac had some very exciting duo adventures, touring the country, playing at Indie Tracks, Glastonbury Festival, Watts Fest, Bris Fest, amongst others, whilst nabbing some rather delightful guest drummers from time to time, Until......they found new Mike!! who we call Micheal, and who has become a permanent member of Poppy And Friends. Poppy And Friends now has an official line up and is an official band, and solid trio. They have since done some great shows together, and are really looking forward to bringing out their first EP together, Flagged and born to be ... which is coming out this September.

REVIEWS

Listenomania, 2010
"Poppy and Friends is a trio of acoustic guitar and voice (Poppy), double bass and drums. Poppy is full of fun and energy, her songs simply swinging between an Irish folk song feel (begins the set with just voice which sounds chant like) and Anti-folk of Kimya Dawson ilk (loose but tight and full of punk heart energy). Engaging songs about her friends, experiences and mayonnaise, Poppy sways from being intimate, punk, rocking, tantrum but all with a big friendly, cheeky grin. It's a pleasure to watch and be in an audience for Poppy and Friends."

Venue Magazine,  2010
" She strums her sweet little heart out and talk-sings friendly, true-ringing tales of her sweet little life, whilst the Friends, most notably Zac Gregory with his louche, note-bending double bass - add jaunty, live-feeling folksiness behind.

Chew Valley Gazette, 2010

" "Poppy Pitt, won many new fans with her lovely voice, but also her mix of emotionally resonant songs that take a deep and often humorous look at life."

Bearded Magazine, Oct 09
"Poppy & Friends manage to straddle the ground that lies between anti-folk legend Kimya Dawson and adorable London type, Emmy the Great effortlessly.... rather like the Bobby MacGees, Poppy and Friends stand separate from their peers both this and that side of the Atlantic. Poppy and Friends might sound cute but there are a few e-numbers in store here. "-Bearded Magazine, Oct 09
